Save Liberty Creek and the Harpeth River Let's Make
Egyptian Lacquer Clean Up Its Mess
Send comments to TDEC about the Revised Clean-up Action
Plan
Egyptian Lacquer (ELMCO) admits that it is the cause of the toxic chemical
spill in a neighborhood in Franklin, TN. The company is not attempting to
adequately clean up the spill. ELMCO's first clean-up plan was rejected, and
the revised corrective action plan submitted in June 2008 still fails to define
the scope of the pollution. It does not offer a clear plan to stop the toxic
cocktail of chemicals from flowing into the (now-dead) Liberty Creek and
the Harpeth River.
What is the problem?
 | | Toluene, acetone and |
| | benzene (a carcinogen) continue to pour in the river and creek
|
 | | Benzene is a known |
| | carcinogen
|
 | | The effects of long-term, |
| | continuous, low-level exposure to toluene and acetone aren't clear but they affect the central nervous system.
|
 | | ELMCO is not using the |
| | best methods to remove the chemicals from our groundwater.
|
 | | The revised Clean-up Action |
| | Plan (CAP) does not propose a clean-up of the groundwater that has migrated off ELMCO's site.
|
 | | ELMCO refuses to define |
| | the exact scope of the spill.

Why we care
The beautiful Harpeth River, which flows through the heart of Franklin, TN,
is being poisoned. Aquatic life is dead or dying in Liberty Creek. We are
concerned for the environment, our families, and our community.
